They stopped at the gas station in stony silence.
“Hey, guys, I’m going to get something for my stomach,” Santana said gently before going over to the convenience store.
Kurt got out of the car as well and ran his credit card through the machine to get gas. “Come on, swipe,” he muttered. It was out of order, but that didn’t stop him. “Swipe! Urgh, Blaine, I need your help. It won’t swipe and I’m in no condition to ‘See Cashier’.” He turned, but Blaine wasn’t there.
He was walking across the lot to a dried up open field.
“Blaine! Where are you going?” He ran after him.
“I’m just sick of it, Kurt,” Blaine heaved, his shoulders shaking as he walked determinedly across the field.
“Blaine, come back here and talk to me—there are coyotes out here!” Kurt sighed, reaching his husband. “And meth-addicts.”
“Every time, Kurt!” Blaine sobbed frustratedly, turning to him. “Every time someone says that we’re getting a baby and I-I always get my hopes up and then-and then when it all falls apart I…I…” He sniffed, wiping furiously at his eyes. “We just have to go through the whole thing again and meanwhile, the child that we do have is at a recital and we’re missing it!”
“I know,” Kurt said, tears streaming down his cheeks. “I’m as frustrated as you are.”
“Are you?” Blaine asked vulnerably. “Because I don’t know how much more of this I can take. I’m so…so tired.” Kurt nodded. “And…disappointed. And just—” He collapsed to the ground. “I’m just tired.”
“Then let’s just take a break,” Kurt said heavily.
Blaine tilted his head up. “Really?”
Kurt nodded, sitting down next to him. “It must be exhausting for you—always having to hold it together for the both of us.” Kurt snuggled into his side as they laid down on the dry earth, weaving their fingers together. “And I’m so tired too.”
Blaine turned to Kurt and smiled. Then he frowned. “I think I’m lying on a rock,” he muttered, pulling it out from under his back.
“I’m lying on my rock,” Kurt mumbled into Blaine’s shoulder, sniffing.
Blaine blinked back more tears and hugged Kurt to his chest tightly.
